- Penzance Mild Champion Beer of Britain
Friday 8 August 2025
. Lewis Elliott and Richard Hickman of Penzance Brewery Co. with their award
Penzance Mild has been named the Champion Beer of Britain 2025 The award is a huge win for the Cornish brewery, putting both the team and their traditional dark mild in the national and international spotlight. The competition takes two years to complete, with blind tastings across local, regional, and national rounds by expert judges and CAMRA members. Lewis Elliott and Richard Hickman of Penzance said:
“It’s quite overwhelming. I'm really glad the style has come back. It’s down to the founder of our brewery Peter Elvin and his nephew Rob, who showed me the ropes. I can’t believe we are here right now, it’s mad!” CAMRA's Awards Director, Gary Timmins, added: “I’m over the moon for Penzance, with Mild being a deserving Champion Beer of Britain. From CAMRA members nominating their favourites, through to those tough regional rounds, to the final panel of judges, this is a vigorous and fiercely independent competition, and Mild has come out on top.
“I hope everyone will join me on the Great British Beer Festival floor where you can try all our final twelve beers, each one is top quality, and each brewer deserves a congratulations in their own right.” St Austell’s Proper Job also secured Gold in the Champion Bottled Beer of Britain category, a fantastic day for Cornish beer.
- WW11 RAF Historian/Heritage request for Cornwall Pubs
Friday 8 August 2025
Dear Kernow CAMRA Team,
I hope this email finds you well. I'm reaching out because I'm currently authoring a book focused on the public houses that served as gathering places for RAF and USAAF personnel during the Second World War, which is scheduled for publication next spring. Given CAMRA's reputation for pub heritage preservation and your branch's local expertise, I was hoping you might be able to help with this historical project.
I've completed the majority of my initial research and have identified many pubs in your area that played significant roles in the wartime experiences of aircrew and ground personnel. Specifically, I'm researching the following pubs and their connections to nearby airfields and squadrons during 1940-1945:
Miners Arms (Mithian) The Old Ship (Padstow) Golden Lion (Padstow) Falcon Inn (Newquay) Traveller's Rest (Newquay) Watergate Bay Hotel (Newquay) The London Inn (Padstow) While I have the basic historical framework established, I'm now looking to enrich the narrative with additional local histories, personal stories, anecdotes, and firsthand accounts that might help bring these venues to life for readers. Often, the most compelling details about wartime pub life come from local sources and community memories that might not appear in official records.
I'm also actively seeking period photographs of these establishments - both exterior and interior shots - with particular interest in images featuring service personnel, squadron gatherings, or other wartime scenes. Original WWII-era photographs would be invaluable, though later historical images that capture the character of these venues would also be greatly appreciated.
I was wondering if your branch might have access to resources that could assist this project, or if you could help connect me with current pub owners, local historians, or community members who might have stories, photographs, or other materials they'd be willing to share? I'm committed to proper attribution and would be delighted to acknowledge any contributions in the published work.
This project aims not only to document an important aspect of wartime social history but also to celebrate the role these establishments played in supporting the young men and women who served during one of Britain's most challenging periods. I believe it aligns well with CAMRA's mission to preserve and promote pub heritage and would be happy to discuss how my research might help with CAMRA's mission.
I'd be happy to discuss this project in more detail at your convenience if that would be helpful. Please let me know if you'd like additional information about the book or the specific research I'm conducting in your area.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Justin Omps

CAMRA Kernow Pub of the Year 2025: The Hole in the Wall, Bodmin
The Hole in the Wall in Bodmin has been named Cornwall CAMRA’s Pub of the Year for 2025, marking its fourth win of this prestigious award. This accolade underscores the pub’s unwavering commitment to quality real ales, exceptional service, and a welcoming atmosphere. CAMRA - The Campaign for Real Ale
A large crowd attended on Saturday to see the certificate awarded to Steve Hall by Russ Durbridge.
A Historic Venue with a Rich Legacy
Located on Crockwell Street, The Hole in the Wall occupies a building with a storied past. Dating back to the mid-1700s, it originally served as a debtor’s prison. The name “Hole in the Wall” reflects its history, where food was passed to prisoners through a hole in the wall. Today, the pub retains much of its historic charm, featuring vintage décor, military memorabilia, and a unique ambiance that attracts both locals and visitors.
A Team Effort Behind the Success
Landlord Steve Hall, who has managed the pub since 2003, expressed his delight upon receiving the award. He credited the success to the dedicated team, including manager Ruth Howiantz and bar staff member Elai Mahoney. Hall emphasized the importance of teamwork in maintaining the pub’s high standards and creating a welcoming environment for all patrons.
Commitment to Quality Real Ales
The Hole in the Wall is renowned for its impressive selection of real ales, sourced from local and regional breweries. The pub’s dedication to serving top-quality beer has been a key factor in its repeated recognition by CAMRA.
Overcoming Challenges
In 2024, the pub faced a challenge when its CAMRA award was temporarily withdrawn due to a complaint about a historical artefact on display. The item, a World War II-era swastika armband, was promptly removed, and the award was reinstated following a review by CAMRA’s national Awards Committee. This incident highlighted the pub’s responsiveness to concerns and its commitment to maintaining an inclusive environment.
Looking Ahead
With this latest accolade, The Hole in the Wall continues to be a cornerstone of Bodmin’s community and a beacon for real ale enthusiasts. As it prepares to compete in the regional CAMRA Pub of the Year contest, the pub remains dedicated to its mission of providing excellent beer and fostering a warm, inclusive atmosphere for all.
For those interested in experiencing this award-winning pub firsthand, The Hole in the Wall is located at Crockwell Street, Bodmin, Cornwall. It offers a selection of real ales, traditional pub fare, and a glimpse into Cornwall’s rich history.

- CAMRA Guest Review
Tuesday 8 April 2025
Nigel and Carol Fox are members of CAMRA Huddersfield Branch and visited Cornwall for a holiday. Some Kernow members met up and sampled the real ale delights of St Ives so here is a review of the holiday from a beer perspective.
Cruising Around Cornwall
10th-14th March 2025
Nigel and myself had booked our jaunt to St Ives in July 2024. We started our journey in Huddersfield getting picked up at 0730. We arrived at our hotel at 1910 and after our evening meal we decided to see if there were any local hostelries open. The first port of call we arrived at was the Queens Hotel, which had 3 hand pumps on – St Austell Tribune + Proper Job. Unfortunately all pumps were off so we had a bottle of St Austell bottle conditioned Hicks which was very palatable. Moving on we called into the Castle. Here there were 2 beers from Doom Bar and 1 from Skinners. We tried the Skinners Betty Stoggs. Pub was busy, looked as if there had been a quiz on. The last pub we called in was The Union Inn, which had 3 beers on but only 2 were on. We tried the St Ives Moer which was very nice.
Tuesday saw us on one of the trips the coach tour had organised – a trip to Falmouth. We had set off from the hotel at 9.30 and arrived in Falmouth at 1030. A bit early for a pint – but we had decided pre hand to go to Helston to try out what beers were on at the Blue Anchor. We caught the U4 Penzance bus to Helston at 11.35 and arrived at the Blue Anchor an hour later. A definite visit to this multi roomed pub and there we had beers from their own brewery Spingo Ales which were all in excellent condition.
After leaving Helston we decided to move onto Penzance (even though we were going there on Thursday) and after leafleting Tourist Information, we were in agreement that we should look for any real ale establishments before heading back to St Ives. First pub we came across was the Crown, home of Cornish Crown Brewery. Both the beers that were from the brewery were a bitter and a porter both in fine fettle. It doesn’t look like a pub that sells real ale so we were both pleasantly surprised The porter was in line for Champion Beer of Britain recently. After leaving the Crown we carried further into town and came across a Wetherspoons house, The Tremenheere. It was the Spoons beer festival and surprisingly they had 4 dark beers on. I tried Elgood’s Mocha Porter and Nigel had Fabrica Birra Perugia chocolate porter which both went down very nicely. One pub we passed on the way up to town was the Star Inn which didn’t look the sort to sell real ale but surprise surprise it supports local breweries and we tried Tintagel Pendragon (an IPA) and Tingtagel Caliburn (a porter) – both went down very nicely. We finished the day going to some football – a gentleman we got in touch with very kindly gave us a lift to and from the game at Hayle. Wednesday was our free day, and before leaving Huddersfield, we’d been in contact with Kernow CAMRA and we spent the afternoon in St Ives trying out one or two of the public houses in the town. We went to one or two that we’d already been to on the Monday but the pub of the day was the Pilchard Press. It’s located on the harbour down a ginnel and if you didn’t know it was there you wouldn’t have known although there is a small sign to let you where it is. When we told them we were going to Penzance the next day they very kindly recommended a couple of hostelries to us that we hadn’t known about when we went round on the Tuesday. A very good afternoon was had by all. Many thanks to Kernow CAMRA for putting up with us for the afternoon. Maybe meet up with them again.
Thursday was already taken up by a trip to Paradise Park, a bird sanctuary at Hayle, and after spending an hour and a half there we then moved on to the other part of the trip to Penzance. After being dropped off Nigel and myself went on to find the 2 pubs recommended by Kernow CAMRA the previous day – The Dock on Quay Street and the Admiral Benbow which was just up the road from the Dock. The Dock had at least 3 beers on so we tried the Brisons bitter we enjoyed. Making our way up to the Admiral Benbow, we were keen to try the 2 beers that they had on there. Both from Treen brewery, Essential and Classic, which were very palatable. We called back into the Crown again before setting off back to St Ives. Our tea wasn’t until 7.00 so we nipped into St Ives again, and called in for a quick pint in the Pilchard Press (just to make sure it was alright & it was!!) and the Lifeboat which was next door. We had noticed it on the Wednesday after we had parted ways with Kernow CAMRA so we thought we’d give it a try. The beer we tried was St Austell Hicks. This was on draught and was very pleasant. After our meal we finished the day at the Belgium Bier Huis Grand Café. The beers we had were good but as predicted very expensive. Carol had a bottle of Kwak – she even had to remove a shoe!!
A good trip overall.
Carol & Nigel Fox

- St Austell Brewery launches all-British session pale ale in supermarkets across the UK
Monday 17 March 2025
.
From Penzance to Shetland - St Austell Brewery launches all-British session pale ale in supermarkets across the UK
St Austell Brewery has launched Anthem, a 3.4% ABV British session pale ale, nationwide in supermarkets for the first time. Previously only available in cask (3.8% ABV) across St Austell Brewery’s pub estate in the South West as well as independent pubs since 2022, beer lovers can now enjoy Anthem session pale ale (3.4% ABV) at home in cans. Anthem (4x440ml) is now available in over 650 Tesco stores across the UK, from Penzance to Shetland, as well as St Austell Brewery’s online shop. The launch is a real celebratory moment in St Austell Brewery’s 174-year history, with Anthem joining its growing range of lower-alcohol beers, alongside the award-winning Proper Job 0.5% IPA, launched last year, and Cornish Best (3.4%). Anthem is perfect for easy summer sipping or for those looking to moderate with a fresh and fruity beer.
Crafted by Brewing Director Georgina Young, this light and refreshing pale ale is made with 100% British ingredients, including malted barley grown in Cornwall and East Anglia, as well as Golden Naked Oats from Northamptonshire. Additionally, four UK-grown hop varieties – Target, Olicana, Jester, and Harlequin – bring the beer’s vibrant, fruit-packed flavours to life.
Georgina Young, Brewing Director at the independent, family-owned business, said: “We’re delighted to see Anthem join the ranks of Tribute, Proper Job, and korev as part of our fantastic beer portfolio, now available for people to enjoy at home.
“This beautifully light pale ale is bursting with juicy tropical notes of mango, peach, and apricot. With its slightly lower ABV of 3.4% in cans, it’s an easy-drinking, sessionable beer made with quality British ingredients – and despite the lower ABV, it doesn’t compromise on flavour.
“We’re especially proud of Anthem’s all-British lineup of ingredients. We work closely with our trusted network of suppliers to ensure we’re using the finest raw ingredients, showcasing the best of British brewing. The hops are exciting English varieties that emulate the juicy hop characteristics often associated with US beers. By sourcing our ingredients locally, we also support our sustainability efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our brewing operations.”
Anthem was the first core beer to be launched by Brewing Director Georgina Young in 2022 when it was introduced on bars in cask form. For those who prefer to enjoy a pint in the pub, Anthem (ABV 3.8%) is available across a selection of St Austell Brewery’s managed pubs in the West Country.
Alongside the launch of Anthem in cans, korev (4.8%), St Austell Brewery’s flagship lager, is also launching regionally in a new 10x440ml can format.
- Pub of the Year announced

CAMRA Kernow Announces Pub of the Year 2025 Winner The Hole in the Wall, Bodmin, Crowned Cornwall’s Best Pub Cornwall CAMRA Kernow is delighted to announce that The Hole in the Wall, Bodmin, has been named Cornwall’s Pub of the Year 2025. The prestigious award recognises excellence in beer quality, atmosphere, service, and commitment to real ale and the local community. The competition was exceptionally fierce this year, with three other outstanding finalists: The Old Ale House in Truro, Moth and the Moon in Falmouth, and The Star Inn, Vogue. Each of these establishments showcases the very best of Cornwall’s pub scene, making the final decision incredibly difficult for the judging panel. Landlord Steve Hall and his team at The Hole in the Wall impressed the judges with their dedication to top-quality real ale, warm hospitality, and historic charm. The pub, known for its rich history and welcoming atmosphere, has become a favourite among both locals and visitors. Paul Waller, Chairman of CAMRA Kernow, commented:“This year’s competition was incredibly close, with all four finalists demonstrating the highest standards of excellence. However, The Hole in the Wall pipped it for its outstanding selection of real ales, commitment to the community, and superb customer experience. Huge congratulations to Steve Hall and his team!” The award will be officially presented at The Hole in the Wall on TBC, where members of CAMRA Kernow and local beer enthusiasts will gather to celebrate the achievement.

- St Austell Brewery celebrates International Women’s Day with special-edition brew
Thursday 6 March 2025
St Austell Brewery brought women together from across its business to create their own beer to mark International Women’s Day. The special brew will be available to order on the bar in selected St Austell Brewery pubs from Friday 7th - 10th March.
Krushin’ It, a special limited-edition golden ale, was brewed up by a 20-strong group of employees led by Brewing Director Georgina Young.
Women from payroll, sales, marketing, its pubs, and finance teams joined together to get stuck in on the brew, which will land in selected St Austell Brewery-managed pubs across the South West to coincide with the day of recognition.
Using special Krush™ hops from the USA, the 5% beer has tropical fruit flavours, including notes of peach, mango, and guava.
Volunteers taking part in the brew got stuck in adding hops and malt, mashing in, digging out spent grain, and learning all about brewing – and one another – in the process.
For Sales Development Manager Olivia Sugg, who is based in Dorset, it was her first time brewing a beer.
She said: “Having the opportunity to not only brew a beer but to do it with Georgina was really special and a pretty cool topic to bring up at the pub with friends and family. It was amazing to get the insight into how the brewing team works, too.”
St Austell Brewery's Brewing Director, Georgina, who took over brewing operations in 2020, said: “With nearly 2,000 employees across the South West, it’s not always easy to connect with colleagues on a personal level, so this event was a fantastic chance for women from all areas of the business to come together and leave their mark on a beer.
“It was also a meaningful way to honour the women who have shaped the business and continue to do so.
“Much of our growth and success can be attributed to female leadership, not just today but throughout our history. Hester Parnall, who served as chairwoman from 1916 to 1939, is a rare example of female leadership in brewing during that era.”
Krushin’ It kicks off St Austell Brewery’s annual Cask Club programme, which encourages experimentation in its Small Batch Brewery. The ongoing programme sees brewers at the business create a beer of their own design, which is showcased on bars across St Austell Brewery’s managed estate throughout the year.

St Austell Brewery launches four limited-edition cask beers for 2025 with a special cinema theme
Shark Bait, Outta Time, Breakfast Club, Maverick, and Jingle All the Way complete the star-studded lineup, which is set to take centre stage in a selection of St Austell Brewery’s managed pubs, as well as in its leased and tenanted estate across the West Country, and in independent pubs across the UK throughout the year.
The exclusive beers form part of St Austell Brewery’s Cask Club series, which sees its brewers experiment by bringing unique brews to life in its Small Batch Brewery.
Shark Bait is light and zesty with flavours of passionfruit and stone fruits. Available from 3rd March, expect a clean, crisp, and fruity 3.9% session pale ale that’s the perfect thirst-quencher to enjoy on dry land.
Outta Time is a 4.3% golden ale, featuring a mix of floral, herbal, and tropical hop flavours, which come together in harmony with sweet, oaty malt. Set your destination to the pub and get ready for a pint to remember from 6th March.
Breakfast Club, a 4.5% golden ale, is a brewing collaboration between St Austell Brewery and Toast Brewing, a London-based craft brewery that uses surplus bakery bread to brew its beers. The fresh and fruity golden ale has been crafted with British Harlequin and Jester hops alongside Toast’s surplus bread crumb and will be available from 30th June.
Maverick is an acceleration of orange, hops, and honey landing on bars from 1st September. Pale in colour and full-bodied, this 4.5% American IPA is brewed with Amarillo, Citra, and Cascade hops.
Jingle All the Way will be the Christmas hero of the pub from 17th November. The premium 4.1% amber ale has a rich aroma of piney hops and raisin, toffee, and malt notes. With a deep and bittersweet finish, having been brewed with British ingredients including Challenger and Goldings hops, it’s the perfect tipple to ring in the festive season.
Georgina Young, St Austell Brewery’s Brewing Director, said: “We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new collection of limited-edition cask beers, inspired by some of the most iconic films in cinematic history.
“This exclusive line pays tribute to legendary movies, blending storytelling with great flavours for an immersive drinking experience. Whether you're a fan of action-packed thrillers or timeless classics, there's a brew that should capture everyone.”

Bowgie Inn Launches Exciting New Membership Scheme for Loyal Customers
The iconic clifftop pub introduces a rewarding way for guests to earn points, enjoy exclusive perks, and stay connected through the Bowgie Inn App.
Bowgie Inn, one of Cornwall’s most iconic clifftop pubs, has launched its brand-new Membership Scheme, designed to reward loyal customers while enhancing their experience at the beloved venue.
For over 50 years, Bowgie Inn has been at the heart of the community, providing stunning coastal views, great food, and a welcoming atmosphere from Crantock, near Newquay. Now, the introduction of the Membership Scheme allows customers to enjoy even more benefits simply by visiting and dining at the pub.
Every time a customer visits Bowgie Inn and spends with them, they will earn points. For every £1 spent, members will receive 1 point. With each point worth 10p, app members can effectively enjoy a 10% discount on future purchases.
The scheme is completely free to customers, who simply need to download the Bowgie Inn App on iOS or Android, create an account, and start earning points immediately.
“Our pub has always been about bringing people together, and this Membership Scheme is our way of giving back to those who make Bowgie Inn the special place it is,” said Sally Pickles, owner of Bowgie Inn. “We want our visitors to feel part of the Bowgie family, and this scheme is just another way we can enhance their experience.”
Beyond earning rewards, the Bowgie Inn App serves as a one-stop hub for everything happening at the pub. Members will receive real-time updates on special deals, seasonal menu changes, and be the first to know about upcoming events.
In 2025, exciting plans are in store, from special promotions to exclusive member-only offers such as double points days and early event access.
“For over 50 years, Bowgie Inn has been a home away from home for locals and visitors alike. Whether it’s catching up with friends over a pint, enjoying a hearty meal after a coastal walk, or simply soaking in the Cornish sunsets, our pub is a place where memories are made. Now, with our Membership Scheme, we’re making those moments even more rewarding!” added Ms Pickles.
