St Austell Brewery launches four limited-edition cask beers for 2025 with a special cinema theme
Shark Bait, Outta Time, Breakfast Club, Maverick, and Jingle All the Way complete the star-studded lineup, which is set to take centre stage in a selection of St Austell Brewery’s managed pubs, as well as in its leased and tenanted estate across the West Country, and in independent pubs across the UK throughout the year.
The exclusive beers form part of St Austell Brewery’s Cask Club series, which sees its brewers experiment by bringing unique brews to life in its Small Batch Brewery.
Shark Bait is light and zesty with flavours of passionfruit and stone fruits. Available from 3rd March, expect a clean, crisp, and fruity 3.9% session pale ale that’s the perfect thirst-quencher to enjoy on dry land.
Outta Time is a 4.3% golden ale, featuring a mix of floral, herbal, and tropical hop flavours, which come together in harmony with sweet, oaty malt. Set your destination to the pub and get ready for a pint to remember from 6th March.
Breakfast Club, a 4.5% golden ale, is a brewing collaboration between St Austell Brewery and Toast Brewing, a London-based craft brewery that uses surplus bakery bread to brew its beers. The fresh and fruity golden ale has been crafted with British Harlequin and Jester hops alongside Toast’s surplus bread crumb and will be available from 30th June.
Maverick is an acceleration of orange, hops, and honey landing on bars from 1st September. Pale in colour and full-bodied, this 4.5% American IPA is brewed with Amarillo, Citra, and Cascade hops.
Jingle All the Way will be the Christmas hero of the pub from 17th November. The premium 4.1% amber ale has a rich aroma of piney hops and raisin, toffee, and malt notes. With a deep and bittersweet finish, having been brewed with British ingredients including Challenger and Goldings hops, it’s the perfect tipple to ring in the festive season.
Georgina Young, St Austell Brewery’s Brewing Director, said: “We are thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new collection of limited-edition cask beers, inspired by some of the most iconic films in cinematic history.
“This exclusive line pays tribute to legendary movies, blending storytelling with great flavours for an immersive drinking experience. Whether you're a fan of action-packed thrillers or timeless classics, there's a brew that should capture everyone.”

Bowgie Inn Launches Exciting New Membership Scheme for Loyal Customers
The iconic clifftop pub introduces a rewarding way for guests to earn points, enjoy exclusive perks, and stay connected through the Bowgie Inn App.
Bowgie Inn, one of Cornwall’s most iconic clifftop pubs, has launched its brand-new Membership Scheme, designed to reward loyal customers while enhancing their experience at the beloved venue.
For over 50 years, Bowgie Inn has been at the heart of the community, providing stunning coastal views, great food, and a welcoming atmosphere from Crantock, near Newquay. Now, the introduction of the Membership Scheme allows customers to enjoy even more benefits simply by visiting and dining at the pub.
Every time a customer visits Bowgie Inn and spends with them, they will earn points. For every £1 spent, members will receive 1 point. With each point worth 10p, app members can effectively enjoy a 10% discount on future purchases.
The scheme is completely free to customers, who simply need to download the Bowgie Inn App on iOS or Android, create an account, and start earning points immediately.
“Our pub has always been about bringing people together, and this Membership Scheme is our way of giving back to those who make Bowgie Inn the special place it is,” said Sally Pickles, owner of Bowgie Inn. “We want our visitors to feel part of the Bowgie family, and this scheme is just another way we can enhance their experience.”
Beyond earning rewards, the Bowgie Inn App serves as a one-stop hub for everything happening at the pub. Members will receive real-time updates on special deals, seasonal menu changes, and be the first to know about upcoming events.
In 2025, exciting plans are in store, from special promotions to exclusive member-only offers such as double points days and early event access.
“For over 50 years, Bowgie Inn has been a home away from home for locals and visitors alike. Whether it’s catching up with friends over a pint, enjoying a hearty meal after a coastal walk, or simply soaking in the Cornish sunsets, our pub is a place where memories are made. Penzance Brewing Company Celebrates First-Place Win for MILD and Second for Scilly Stout (2025) at the Champion Beer of Britain Awards
Penzance Brewing Company is basking in the glow of incredible achievements at the 2024 Champion Beer of Britain Awards, where they not only secured the coveted first-place award for their MILD but also earned second place in a South West region for their beloved Scilly Stout in 2025.
These accolades are a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship, dedication, and passion that has defined the brewery’s journey.
A Triumph for Penzance Brewing Company
The Champion Beer of Britain Awards are one of the most prestigious in the brewing world, and to come out on top in such a competitive environment is an extraordinary accomplishment. With MILD’s first-place win, Penzance Brewing Company has once again proven that they are at the forefront of brewing excellence. This victory is made even more remarkable by the second-place finish in 2025 of their Scilly Stout, which continues to impress beer lovers and judges alike.
Celebrating Key Individuals:
Tracey Elvin – A heartfelt congratulations to Tania, whose leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping Penzance Brewing Company's success. Tania's unwavering commitment to quality brewing and her support for the team have been pivotal in reaching this remarkable milestone. Her ability to combine tradition with innovation has undoubtedly contributed to the brewery’s well-earned reputation. Pete would have been proud of this team.
Lewis Elliott (Head Brewer) – Lewis has played an integral role in creating the award-winning beers that have taken the brewing world by storm. His expertise in crafting beers that are both distinctive and true to style is reflected in the recognition of MILD and Scilly Stout at this year’s awards. Lewis’s passion for quality brewing is evident in every pour, making him a key driver of the brewery’s ongoing success.
Richard Hickman – Richard has contributed significantly to Penzance Brewing Company’s reputation for producing top-tier beers. His attention to detail and dedication to the craft have clearly been essential in achieving these prestigious awards, including Scilly Stout’s strong showing at the Champion Beer of Britain competition 2025.
The Story Behind Scilly Stout
While MILD took home the gold, Scilly Stout’s second-place finish is a feat worthy of celebration in itself. This full-bodied stout with deep roasted malt flavours and a smooth finish has long been a favourite among locals and visitors alike.
It’s a beer that embodies the spirit of Cornwall, with its rich flavours and complex profile capturing the essence of the coastal environment. Scilly Stout’s impressive performance in this highly competitive category highlights the brewery's ability to produce a range of exceptional beers.
The MILD Victory: A Well-Deserved Triumph
MILD’s first-place win at the 2024 Champion Beer of Britain Awards is a special moment, particularly given the style’s resurgence in recent years. With its deep malt character, smooth drinkability, and balanced flavour profile, MILD has a long history in British brewing but has often been overshadowed by more contemporary styles.
However, Penzance Brewing Company’s dedication to perfecting this classic style shows that MILD is still very much alive and well. This win places Penzance Brewing Company among the best in the country and showcases their skill in creating beers that balance tradition and innovation.
A Bright Future Ahead
As Penzance Brewing Company celebrates these significant victories, it’s clear that their hard work, expertise, and passion for brewing have set the stage for an even more exciting future. With national recognition now firmly in hand, there’s no doubt that MILD and Scilly Stout will continue to capture the hearts and palates of beer lovers around the UK and beyond.
This recognition also brings greater visibility to Penzance Brewing Company’s dedication to their craft, and we’re eager to see how their award-winning beers will continue to shape the future of the brewing industry.
Congratulations to the Entire Team!
From the brewery’s staff to its loyal customers, the success at the 2024 Champion Beer of Britain Award it is a true reflection of Penzance Brewing Company’s collective effort. Congratulations to Tania, Lewis, Richard, and everyone involved. Your hard work and passion have been rewarded, and we look forward to seeing what comes next in your brewing journey.

- Cornwall’s Biggest Charitable Beer Festival Raises £12,000
Thursday 23 January 2025
.
Thousands of revellers descended on St Austell Brewery for its much-anticipated annual Celtic Beer Festival in November.
The day-long festival transformed the brewery's historic Victorian cellars into a bustling venue, with five bars offering more than 100 beers from over 50 UK breweries who generously donated their beer, accompanied by live music throughout the day.
A remarkable £12,000 was raised for charity during the event, thanks to ticket sales from the 1,300+ attendees who joined in with the community spirit of the festival.
The primary goal of the event is to raise funds for the St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust, which supports vital causes across the South West.
Since its launch in 2003, the Charitable Trust has raised over £1,000,000, aiding organisations and individuals in need. In 2024 alone, the Trust donated more than £95,000 to various causes, including youth mental health services, the air ambulance, and local families requiring support or equipment.
The annual Celtic Beer Festival remains the Trust’s flagship fundraising event, alongside various other efforts from its pub teams and individuals, such as pub quizzes, sponsored walks, and a charity gala with a silent auction which raised a huge £47,000. Team members from its 160+ pub estate also generously take part in various challenges to raise additional funds each year.
Georgina Young, Brewing Director at St Austell Brewery, said: “The 23rd Celtic Beer Festival was a highlight in our calendar where we all get together to celebrate every wonderful style of beer out there, from porters to sours, lagers to seaweed-salted bitters. There was something new for everyone to try.
“What’s more, it was all for a great cause, with the money raised going back to brilliant causes across the South West via our Charitable Trust.”
The St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust accepts applications from across the South West, from Cornwall up to Somerset all year-round. It is now encouraging individuals and charities across the region to apply for grants to kickstart their year.
Examples of where the money has helped in past years include funding home equipment needed for people with disabilities, as well as buying an adaptive surf wheelchair for a small water charity in Bude.
The primary purpose of the Trust is to support local campaigns for organisations designed to help people in need, or to support individuals who don’t have access to charity donations in the ‘normal’ way.
Those interested in applying for a grant from the St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust can do so by visiting: https://staustellbrewery.co.uk/charitable-trust/.

- Message from Wayne at Stag Hunt Ponsanooth
Friday 17 January 2025
Hello all, firstly apologies for the silence on our end while we have been in consultation. It was with a heavy heart we shut the doors to the pub, the reason for this was due to not enough people coming in and buying a drink. We cannot afford to keep the pub alive if not enough people are using it regularly. We have however after some discussion, found a potential way for the pub to remain open while we await a sale, but it needs your help. What we would require from the village is people to volunteer their time to work the bar and for a large amount more of the village to come through the door and buy a drink. If you believe you can help with this please contact us separately through messenger and if enough people can support us we can meet to discuss further. Many thanks Wayne and Michelle

- Cornwall CAMRA Twixmas social in Falmouth
Friday 27 December 2024
We had a huge turnout of members to the Twixmas pub crawl in Falmouth on Friday 27 December, organised by Jan and Vince Curtis. A veritable gathering of the clan.
As usual, we started at the Seven Stars although some members were early and nipped in the Packet Station for a quick one, while other members arrived 40 minutes late thanks to buses not running to timetable. The Seven Stars was packed with jovial members in seasonal dress. One even brought his pet piglet.
Then it was time to move on to the Beerwolf Books, again with a superb range of well-kept beers on handpump.
Suitably fortified, the next pub in the crawl was more of a breathless stagger up a great height of many steps to the Seaview Inn from which there is a great view of the sea (surprise, surprise) and Falmouth port. The mariner on the pub sign looked remarkably like the one famous for saying “I’ve never known a night like it…”. I was welcomed with various sorts of wave from my colleagues and even the piglet came out from his master’s coat to say hello. It was well worth the effort with more lovely beers on handpump!
Onward and downward to the Touc Inn which is a new bar opened in September 2024 downstairs under the Cornish Bank. The entrance can take a bit of finding and involves a serpentine staircase (its shape, not the rock) into the vaults of the Bank as evinced by the thick bars on the windows. Once inside, we packed the small bar, which is fully equipped for all sorts of drinks including handpumped cask ale and real cider.
Time marched on and it was to the Oddfellows Arms next, known as the Oddies to the locals. This meant more steps upwards but not too far this time. Three handpumped beers of different styles were there for our delectation. More conversation ensued and the little piglet had a sleep.
The day finished with a visit to another flagship pub – the ‘front on Custom House Quay. An even huger range of beers was available on the long row of pumps which made the choice so difficult. Last pint or two, and fish and chips from upstairs for some!
Thanks Jan and Vince for leading and to all those members who turned up to make it such a grand day out.
Cheers, Steve Barber
- Cornwall CAMRA Christmas Lunch at the Royal Oak, Lostwithiel
Tuesday 24 December 2024
Lostwithiel is an exceptional place for several reasons. Founded not long after the Norman Conquest it was built by the lords of nearby Restormel Castle and became the capital of Cornwall in the 13th century. Today it still contains several historic buildings and the pack-horse bridge over the River Fowey at its tidal limit. It is one of the five Stannary Towns in Cornwall and was the scene of an important battle between the Roundheads and Cavaliers in 1644 (the Cavaliers won). An unusual fact of Lostwithiel is the coincidence of the St Michael and St Mary currents, or ley lines, at the church which itself contains some intriguing features. These currents course from near Land's End all the way to the Norfolk coast. St Michael runs along the road over the bridge and past the Globe Inn while St Mary goes right through the King's Arms and runs across the railway station.
Jolly members of Cornwall Branch converged on the Royal Oak in Duke Street on Friday 13 December 2023, hoping for good luck.
We certainly got that in the line-up of cask beer put on for us by Graham and Simon – Sharp’s Atlantic, Sea Fury and St Austell Proper Job.
The Christmas fare was also excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed the event.
Cheers, Simon, Graham and team!
Merry Christmas and a Hoppy New Year

- Cornwall CAMRA Presentation to Treen’s Brewery
Monday 23 December 2024
Saturday the 7 December 2024 was notable for two memorable events. The first was Storm Darragh that lashed Cornwall with howling winds and rain bringing down trees, cables and any CAMRA members who got in the way. The second was the presentation of two CAMRA certificates to Treen’s Brewery at the Stag Hunt at Ponsanooth.
Not to be put off, especially due to the lure of Treen’s beers on the bar, I set off by bus for Ponsanooth, planning to use the A roads which I hoped would be less likely to be blocked. So far so good until it became clear that the first bus was making heavy weather and not going to make my change point in time to catch the second bus to get to the pub. Desperate measures were called for. I got off the bus by Kennal Bridge and walked up the wooded viaduct valley with swaying trees dropping twigs and branches down on me. I passed the entrance to Treen’s and Dynamite Valley breweries and arrived on time at the pub unscathed. As the Poacher advert went “I’ve never known a night like it, and I’m not looking forward to the journey home neither!”
Landlord Wayne Randle had a wonderful range of Treen’s beer so I got stuck in!
There were two certificates to be presented to Simon Treen for winning gold places in CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain heats. Well done, Simon!
Cornwall Branch Chair Paul Waller made the presentations to Simon. A good time was had by all.
Eventually it was time to face Darragh again. Fortunately, the beer has improved since 1987 even if the weather hasn’t.
Cheers, Steve Barber

- Tim’s Tipple Driftwood Spars
Saturday 14 December 2024
It’s time again for Tim’s Tipple!
This time, Tim’s Tipple is Driftwood Spars Brewery's Codename Robin!
As winter draws in here on the Cornish coast, a bold Robin has taken to sneaking into our brewer's yard at every opportunity. We see it as a good omen and thought we'd brew an extra special beer in honour of our new companion.
A 7%, Gingerbread Stout - Rich molasses and gingerbread notes on the nose followed up by a smooth, roasty dark chocolate flavour, finishing with a lingering gingerbread finish to compliment the malt sweetness.
It's even gluten-free!
Come down to the pub and try this exceptional brew - you won’t want to miss it! See you soon at The Drifty!

- Cornwall CAMRA Visits Driftwood Spars and Mason Breweries
Thursday 28 November 2024
There was another mildly momentous first for Cornwall Branch, or at least a revival since 2019, on Thursday 28 November following the first Beer Festival 12 days before. This time it was the resumption of visiting our wonderful Cornish breweries. The last time was in December 2019 at St Ives at Marco’s original site before he moved to his new, much larger premises in Hayle.
Val & Kevin kindly organised visits for us to Driftwood Spars in Trevaunance Cove and then to Mason's Brewery in Threemilestone. Two breweries in one day!
Starting at the Driftwood Spars pub at 12:45, we settled in for a pint or three from the bar. Head Brewer Tim Lawrence came over from the brewery next door to give us a talk about his plans for the brewery.
At least one of the Tasting Panel members present completed tastings for Tim’s Jester (a golden ale) and Stippy Stappy (a New World IPA), followed by Pete Martin’s gorgeous, award-winning Alfie’s Revenge (a Strong Ale).
Tim then took us over the road to the brewery to show us the kit that he uses to brew traditional and craft beers. He drew off a sample of fermenting beer for us to try. Woo!
Val and Kevin were proud to show me the glass lid of a small brewing vessel that Pete had etched to celebrate their happy event.
After thanking Tim for his hospitality, we walked up Quay Road to get the bus to Threemilestone. Guided into the huge industrial estate by those who have beaten a path to the taproom before, we arrived at Mason's Brewing Company as darkness fell.
Head Brewer and proprietor Mike Mason welcomed us to his clean and smart unit that he has decorated to look as pub-like as possible. The taproom takes up most of the space, with the brewery alongside one wall.
Mike gave us a brief chat about his brewery and vision while we sampled a few beers. His Three Spires Pale ale was on handpump plus several craft beers on keg including the tasty Baltic Porter (I like dark beers!).
At the far end of the room was a proper bar complete with four handpumps and a row of taps.
Mike’s taproom makes a welcome second pub for the village (the Social Club is members only). Cheers, Mike!
A very successful day out for all.
Thanks to Val and Kevin, Tim and Mike.

- Bell Inn, Launceston
Wednesday 27 November 2024
The Bell Inn, Launceston’s much loved real ale haven, is on the market due to the landlord’s impending retirement. On Thursday December 5th at 7pm we are holding a meeting for people interested in keeping the pub as it has been for the last 6 years, at the Bell Inn.
We are looking for people with knowledge of pub management, potential investors, experience of acv procedures and other areas that may be useful to us. Could you possibly draw this to the attention of our members in the county.
We already have a number of potential investors and landlord accommodation would also be available . Any help or support you could offer would be greatly appreciated. My thanks in anticipation, Chris Ham

- St Austell Cask Club
Wednesday 27 November 2024

This week's Cask Club release is Off Leash
Brewed by Rob Alder, Off Leash is the beer-ification of those late year walks with the dog, as the leaves lose the last of their colour and you start longing for the fireside seat with a robust beer in your hand.
Centennial and Amarillo hops offer flavours of orange, whilst Northern Brewer hops add a light and fresh mintiness - reminscent of the cold air biting at your nose.
The robust malt base brings a warmth in notes of toffee a biscuit, creating a truly delicious beer that's as refreshing as it is comforting. Cheers!

- Treens Launch Winter Ale
Tuesday 26 November 2024
TREENS CLOUD CUCKOO
This warming winter ale is matured for a minimum of 6 weeks in our cellar to ensure a full and smooth flavour. Deep ruby, full-bodied strong malty ale. Plum and soft fruits dominate followed by a smooth roasted finish.
The name reminds us of our early years “Cuckoo Brewing”.
A silver in the Strong Milds category at the 2024 CAMRA South-West regionals, where it has been a consistent winner for several years.
Available from Saturday 7th December at the CAMRA Social at the Stag Hunt.
- CAMRA Cornwall Presentation to the Star at Vogue and Beer Festival
Saturday 23 November 2024
Saturday November 16th was at least mildly momentous in the recent history of Cornwall CAMRA.
We had our first CAMRA beer festival since 2019! That was of course the last official Falmouth festival, but this one was on a much more manageable scale.
Falmouth had become a 200+ cask behemoth whereas this was 16 casks and 4 ciders.
The excellent venue was the large garden marquee at The Star at Vogue pub.
During the course of the afternoon Cornwall CAMRA Chairman Paul Waller presented the Star at Vogue licensees, Mark and Rachel Graham, with their award for winning Cornwall Pub of the Season (Autumn).
The beer offering was a great balance of golden, dark and traditional styles with Cornish ales coming from Tintagel, Bude Coastal, Keltek, Driftwood Spars and Treen’s. As a special "guest of honour" there was a cask of Penzance Mild to celebrate its recent gold award in its category at the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain competition. Devon was represented by Exeter Brewery, and it was in fact their excellent organic ale Avocet which was voted "Beer of the Festival". There was real cider on offer from Trevor's Cider Farm at Baldhu.
There was evening musical entertainment from Trevor Kemp and Matt Partridge & Casi, and the raffle raised a triple figure sum for the Betty Stogs charity.
This event was pretty much put together lock, stock and all the barrels by Paul Waller so massive thanks go to him along with his helpers Paul K, Mike, Peter plus Jules and Luke, and of course Mark and Rachel at the Star.
