Far West for a Wednesday Walkabout

Wednesday 23 January 2019

Cornish Crown porter presentation

A group of CAMRA Kernow members went down to the far west for a Wednesday Walkabout on 23 January. Our first and last port of call was the Crown at Penzance where we partook of the excellent Cornish Crown beers and presented brewer Josh Dunkley with a CAMRA certificate for his win at the 2018 Falmouth Beer Festival with Silver in Champion Cornish Porters for Cornish Crown Porter.

It was a pleasure to meet our good friends and formerly active CAMRA members Ted and Joy James in the Crown. We then took the bus to St Just for a tour of the four pubs there. The first was the excellent Star Inn, a Good Beer Guide regular.

A pint of St Austell Cornish Best Bitter or two went down well. We dragged ourselves away from the conversation there and walked a few yards to the Kings Arms in the square.

Another cosy granite St Austell pub where Tribute was enjoyed in front of a big open fire. Another short walk across the square brought us to the imposing granite Wellington Hotel, also St Austell, for another pint of Tribute.

Finally, we made the final few yards to the equally imposing Commercial Hotel where we settled in the bar at the back for our final pint of Sharp's Doom Bar before catching the bus back to Penzance. The depths of winter may not be the best time to appreciate the most westerly town in Cornwall at 5 degrees 40 minutes west (further west than Campbeltown of whisky loch fame) but few such small towns can boast so many pubs.
